What You Will Do
This role requires a dynamic leader with a proven track record in program management, a deep understanding of laboratory automation, and the ability to drive cross-functional teams toward achieving measurable business objectives. The Director, Program Management Office (PMO) leads the planning, execution, and delivery of complex custom laboratory automation systems. This position leads, mentors, and develops a team of Program and Project Managers, ensuring on-scope, on-schedule, and on-budget project delivery, while driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality and efficiency.
This is an onsite role, and candidates should reside in San Diego, CA. This position may require 10-20% domestic and international travel.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide visionary leadership to the PMO team, fostering a culture of excellence, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Develop and implement strategies, policies, and tools to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with client and business goals.
- Monitor program status, risks, and issues, providing regular reports to clients, senior management, and stakeholders.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with technical teams, clients, vendors, and partners while serving as the primary point of contact for guidance and escalation.
- Work with PMO and business development teams to scope proposals for extensions, change orders, and new projects.
- Manage and allocate matrixed resources, addressing gaps and constraints while collaborating with senior leadership on long-term planning.
- Set priorities for project-driven software driver development, aligning sprint planning with workcell project milestones.
- Collaborate with Software Team leadership to prioritize project-driven and internal software projects.
- Plan and execute design studies for late pre-sale stage opportunities, ensuring proposal accuracy and evaluating risk prior to project acceptance.
- Develop baseline schedules for pre-sale opportunities, weighing multiple factors including project complexity and resource availability.
- Ensure all projects comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science, or a related field. Advanced degree(s) (MBA or MS) preferred.
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification or equivalent.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in Program Management of technical products, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Extensive knowledge of laboratory automation systems and related technologies.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Business experience in budget & profitability management and resource allocation.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Experience with core business and project management tools like the MS Office Suite, MS Project, SmartSheet, ClickUp, etc.
